Echo in the Dark (Natterer’s Bat) is the title track and final single from Echo in the Dark, a collaborative album by Hanna Tuulikki and Tommy Perman composed entirely from bat echolocation calls fused with the human voice. Released 7 August 2026 on Glasgow independent label KIN-TU, with the full album following on 28 August.
Inspired by the echolocation calls of the Natterer’s bat as heard through a heterodyne bat detector, the track transforms this species’ short, whispering clicks into Italo-inflected minimalist synth-pop. Bat-derived rhythms are fused with layered vocal pulses and restrained electronic textures, forming a delicate framework for voice-led melodic motifs and subtle rhythmic movement. Its bittersweet lyrics invite the listener to feel the echo and change the story, reframing listening as an act of transformation, before closing with a field recording of a bat call dissolving into the distant night.
B-side Hear and Follow (Bechstein’s Bat) samples the echolocation calls of the Bechstein’s bat to create a heartbeat-inspired pulse that nods to the deep, hypnotic grooves of Detroit. Reverb-soaked, layered vocals carry the music beyond the city and into the forest, forming a fitting soundtrack for Britain’s rarest bat.
